Rarecells CEO Prof. Patrizia Paterlini Discusses Detecting Cancer Before It Appears on Imaging on Newsmax’s Saturday Agenda

Prof. Patrizia Paterlini, MD, PhD, founder and CEO of Rarecells, appeared on Newsmax’s Saturday Agenda on Saturday, September 26, 2026, to discuss how detecting tumor cells in the blood could allow cancer to be found years before it becomes visible on a scan.
Asked by host Rob Astorino whether it is possible to detect cancer before a patient knows they have it, Prof. Paterlini pointed to published research in high-risk patients.
“In patients at risk of developing lung cancer, it has been demonstrated that cancer can be detected one to four years before it was detectable by imaging,” she said.
The study she referenced followed 168 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who were at risk of developing lung cancer and found that circulating tumor cells isolated with Rarecells’ ISET® technology preceded the appearance of lung nodules on CT scans (Ilie et al 2014 PLOS One).
Prof. Paterlini also described the two-step approach Rarecells is developing. A first low-cost test aims to indicate that a cancer is developing, even before it can be seen on imaging. If that result is positive, a second molecular analysis would be performed on the same blood sample, with no additional blood draw, to help identify where in the body the cancer is developing, so physicians can focus surveillance on the relevant organ.
Prof. Paterlini is an oncologist, hematologist, and molecular biologist, Emeritus Professor at Université Paris Cité.
